What are the different types of car servicing?

Car servicing is a term used to describe the regular checkups that your car needs to keep it running smoothly. Often people might think that they don’t need to worry about servicing their car until it starts to make noises or skip gears, but it’s actually much more important than that.

Car servicing is all about keeping your car in good condition and prolonging its life. It also lets you keep tabs on any potential issues that could affect your driving safety.

There are different car servicing types available, depending on what you want from your vehicle and what features it has.

Here we explain the most common types of car servicing:

  1. Standard Service/ Preventative maintenance: The most basic type of car servicing is preventative maintenance (PM) or ‘wear and tear servicing. This covers routine checks such as fluid levels, tyre pressure and brake pad wear. PM also includes changing filters and spark plugs (as applicable). The frequency of PM varies from manufacturer to manufacturer but you should expect your local mechanic to recommend it every 10,000km or six months (whichever comes first).

  2. Major service: A major car service covers everything in a standard service plus replacing parts such as brakes or tyres if they’re worn out beyond standard wear limits (this may happen sooner depending on how often you drive). Major services are usually recommended every two years or so, longer if you drive less than 13,000 km per year.

  3. Oil Changes: An oil change is one of the most basic car services that can be done. It involves changing a certain amount of motor oil in your engine so that it has enough lubrication for running properly. If you do not change your oil regularly, it can cause serious damage to your engine and other parts. A typical recommendation is to change it every 5000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first.

  4. Brake system test: This checks all of your vehicle’s brakes to ensure they’re working properly – usually done after any work has been carried out on the braking system or during major services where brake pads may have been replaced.

What Happens During a Car Service?

During a car service, your car mechanic will check all areas of your vehicle. They’ll look at the engine, transmission, and brakes as well as any other mechanical parts of your car. They’ll also inspect your tires’ condition and ensure everything is operating correctly.

If there are any problems with your car’s engine or transmission, they’ll let you know what those issues are and how much it will cost to fix them so that you can decide whether or not it’s worth investing in repairs at this time.

The main purpose of a car service is to make sure that everything is working properly so that you don’t have any major issues down the road when you’re on the road driving around town or on vacation driving through unfamiliar terrain.

Usually, a car service includes:

  • 60-Point Inspection: Technicians perform a thorough inspection of your vehicle to ensure that it is running properly.
  • Tire Rotation: Experts inspect your car tyres and their rotation capabilities to ensure safety and ease in driving.
  • Wiper Blade Replacement: Technicians replace worn or damaged wiper blades to keep you safe during inclement weather conditions.
  • Brake Inspection: This involves inspecting brake pads and rotors to ensure that they function properly during braking operations.
  • Air Filter Replacement: Inspect air filters to evaluate whether they need replacement or repairs to keep your engine running smoothly and efficiently.
  • The Wheel Alignment Process: Wheel alignment ensures that all four wheels are pointing in the same direction, so they don’t wear down at different rates or cause your car to pull off-centre when you drive it down the road. Your technician will adjust each wheel so that it runs parallel with its neighbour and doesn’t hit any curbs or other objects when you turn corners or stop suddenly during turns.

And much more.

How often should a car be serviced?

There are no specific guidelines for how often your car should be serviced. The frequency of servicing will depend on the type and age of your car and the service plan you have with the dealership.

If you have a newer car, having it serviced every six months is generally recommended. This is particularly important if you have had a major service done to your vehicles in the past, such as a timing belt replacement or transmission work.

But even if your car is older, you should still consider having it serviced regularly. Regular servicing can help prevent bigger problems down the track and save money on repairs later on.

Regular servicing also allows mechanics to spot potential problems before they become serious issues. For example, if an engine light comes on while driving, it may not mean anything serious at first – until they take a look under the bonnet and find out that there’s an oil leak or something similar going on inside your engine.
